To construct emissions inventories for each geography, the CTI methodology uses a bottom-up approach, evaluating activity metrics and their associated emissions intensity metrics. The product of activities and emissions intensity metrics results in estimates of sub-sector emissions, which are aggregated to arrive at total emissions for the sector.

The area graph to the left shows emissions rates over time, while the line graphs to the right display activity and intensity metrics by geography over time. At the highest level of aggregation, the area graph shows direct and process emissions by sector over time for the five geographies currently modeled as part of the Carbon Transparency Initiative; when a sector is selected, direct, process and indirect emissions by subsector are displayed; when a subsector is selected, direct, process and indirect emissions by geography are displayed.
